Livermore, California – Beginnings, and History
In the 1840s, William Mendenhall founded Livermore and named it after Robert Livermore. This was a friend of his who was a local rancher. Prior to incorporation in 1796, Livermore was home to native people known as Costanoan, or Ohlone. Every mission in the area had at least two to three friars and a contingent number of up to five soldiers to keep order.
Throughout the early 1800s, the area of Livermore-Amador Valley was mostly used for grazing Mission San Jose herds of horses, sheep, cattle. These were wild-growing herds without fences that got culled yearly to generate tallow and cowhides. The leftover animal parts were then left out in the wild to feed some of the grizzly bears that roamed the region.
